A plan to put US Airways Group Inc.'s latest cost-cutting proposal to the carrier's 3,400 pilots for ratification was blocked late Monday by a powerful faction of its pilots union's leadership council, raising new questions about the airline's chances for survival.
After more than a week of intense bargaining, four members of the 12-person elected council defeated a resolution to put the proposal out for a vote. The four represent the most pilots. A spokesman for the Air Line Pilots Association said afterward that it isn't clear whether discussions will continue between US Airways and ALPA......

Despite the airline's dire outlook, US Airways "has seen very little movement" in customer-booking patterns or frequent-flier-award redemptions, a spokesman said. If US Airways revisits bankruptcy, it is expected to continue operating normally, at least initially. But the prospect for liquidation is real, especially if US Airways' largest creditors start withdrawing their support for reorganization.
