Someone please shed a little light on this for me:
I'm trying to book travel for later this year PHL-SEA. US is only operating:
INBOUND: 7:55AM/6:15PM(nonstop)
5:25AM/2:40PM(connx via CLT)

RETURN: 7:00AM/11:15AM(nonstop)
12:25PM/10:45PM(connx via CLT)

THAT'S IT! All other flights are codeshares operated by UA via ORD/DEN/SFO/IAD. Is SEA not profitable or are the loads just so piss poor in the winter that US can't justify any additional traffic there? Anyone with some info please advise....

SpinDoc replies:

US has been flying the wrong sized
planes into SEA and other west coast
cities for several years. It's hard to
make a profit when you're flying
A319's in markets that would make
money with a 757 or A321. The
incremental revenue from a
larger number of seats and cargo
capacity would more than offset the
cost of operating the flight.

We make way too much money running 757's between MCO/CLT/BWI.
Why would you put a long-haul aircraft on a long-haul flight?

Hmmm...

What are your travel days? What are those flight numbers you've listed? There's a time change this weekend and a schedule change, too, but I still see 2 non-stops in both directions.

Here's an example (and under $300 r/t as of now on Orbitz):
Dec 5 PHL/SEA

US Airways #107 7:55A PHL 11:04A SEA 319
OR
US Airways #273 6:15P PHL 9:21P SEA 320

AND Dec 9 SEA/PHL

US Airways #274 7:00A SEA 2:56P PHL 319
OR
US Airways #72 11:15A SEA 7:10P PHL 319

It appears that the Northwest is not a priority to US. For what reason I don't know. There are some major corporations based here i.e. Boeing, Nordstroms, Costco,Starbucks,Microsoft,Weyerhauser, etc. Plus it is a major shipping and cruise port. And PDX,YVR, and SEA are the only major airports within a 300 mile radius. Go figure.

There are five daily HP codeshare flights SEA-PHL possible, three via PHX and two via LAS.

Given that the current US 757s have hardly any F seats, it's a blessing they don't fly 'em transcon except for LAS.

The 757 can outperform the A321 anytime, US has/had major engine performance issues on 321, the airplane is a pig performance wise.

Flyaway, you are severely misinformed when it comes to engine performance.

It's not the best performer but better than the 727 was. The problem with the 321 is not the engine performance (you're wrong) but with the wing. It's the same wing as the 319/320 but with the added weight. The slotted flaps only provide a better pitch "attitude" on T/O and landing. Most importantly, it's a comfortable "pig".
