The city will dedicate the control tower at Scholes International Airport today.
The tower was funded by a $1.8 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.
“The tower requires pilots to adhere to their flight plans,†Airport Director Hud Hopkins said. “This federal regulation enhances the overall safety of the skies surrounding Galveston.â€
The addition of the tower changes Scholes International Airport’s status from a Class E to a Class D airspace.
The FAA grant was administered by the Texas Department of Transportation’s Aviation Division.
To meet the eligibility requirements for a control tower, cities must have more than 100,000 operations, which include landings and take-offs.
Scholes Airport secured the grant by providing a 10 percent local funding match.
