The private sector's role in developing airports, which currently handles 33 million passengers annually in Saudi Arabia, has been emphasised by Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Premier and Minister of Defence and Aviation.
Presiding over the first meeting here on Tuesday of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), the former Presidency of Civil Aviation (PCA), which has been turned into an independent body operating on a commercial basis, Prince Sultan explained that the private sector's involvement was necessary to meet the future needs.
He said the PCA was transformed into an independent body after conducting detailed studies in order to meet growing requirements of the industry.
"Commercial operation will give GACA greater flexibility in improving its operation efficiency in tune with modern developments so as to face international competition and develop its resources to achieve self-dependence," he said.
Prince Sultan said appointment of private sector representatives on the authority's board was aimed at improving services and increasing private-sector role.
"The future phase demands more efforts from the sincere children of this country to strengthen this vital sector," he said, urging businessmen to make use of the flexibility offered by the new Civil Aviation Law.
