This is beginning to pop up around the boards...from plane business to Yahoo. AWA is supposedly close to approval for 757 ETOPS, however only 3 of their aircraft are eligible. Word has it that AWA would purchase all Hawaiian flying and all of the ATA 757-300's. Not sure what this would do to the codeshare with HA if it does happen. HP has been actively searching for more RR powered 757's for some time now. We'll see if this shakes out.

I did not know that HI flying was restricted. I thought anyone could fly it if they wanted. With all the extra planes sitting in the desert, why can't AWA just buy some 757's that meet their needs and start it themselves.

PHX-HNL would be a nice addition to their route network.

The 757's AWA wants are not too plentiful right now. I don't think there are any in the desert to get with the right engines etc. HNL is not restricted as far as I know. Possibly just a tie-in deal from ATAH.
A couple of times it's been mentioned that if the right deal comes along....the ATSB restrictions would'nt be a problem. What AWA would have to do to get approval I don't know for sure though.

Can AWA buy other airline's assets before it pays back all of the ATSB loan? Just wondering...........

In short, I think yes. I believe the ATSB agreements allow for AWA to add certain specific types of assets in order to grow, such as aircraft and facilities. I believe AWA announced an order for 22 Airbuses a few months ago, which definitely makes it post-loan approval.

Hmmmm. Wonder if AWA will/would get it right this time around. I agree, it'd be a nice addition to their route map, but they don't need to have "deja vu all over again."

IF AWA gets the 757-300s from ATAH, they will operate at a MUCH lower cost per seat mile than the 747-200s. I think AWA can make Hawaii profitable with the 757s. I say give it a go. Just my thoughts.......

I agree; that's kind of what I was driving at. Didn't that flight basically devolve into a non-rev/ FF special?

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't NW buy the HNL-NGO route from HP? (EDIT:this part deleted-stupid question )

I If so, what happened to the original PHX-HNL rights?

I don't think you need "rights" to fly to HNL. It's still part of the U.S. All you need is an a/c and enough jet-A to get there.

D'oh! (slaps hand against forehand). Well, that's what happens when I think too much  .

I used to non rev on it monthly, but it wasn't always easy! I was on a flight out of HNL that did an emergency turn around because the gear punctured the fuselage, and they wouldn't retract. Only 747 at the time, it took 4 days to get that plane home and lots of angry pax!

I could dig service to KOA or LIH or OGG, I'd be nonrevving like crazy.

maybe you'll get your wish...more rumors are circulating that AWA wants to fly to the 4 major islands...thereby perhaps saving their codeshare with HA..We'll see what pans out.

Wow, that would be something. Does HP have enough routes where traffic would be sufficient for a 753?

Well...AWA would love to put a 757 on Costa Rica. The 319 has problems with weight restriction. They've also looked at further Latin America expansion. Perhaps even Puerto Rico.
