FAA Jumpseat rumor, second hand. The Company has been told there will be no "practice" period on the rules. US Airways had intended to give the rules a test run this Fall, with the understanding they could say "Sorry, just testing, get back to work" when a trip failed. Word is the FAA has said once implemented by any carrier, the rules are permanent. No going back. Thus I am told US will NOT implement the rules until 4 Jan 14, under the assumption there will be an extension to the drop dead date. Go figure, an extension! Also, the new call sign will be "Goose" in honor of Sully and Jeff, and that guy from E.R. RR

It's not a rumor. It's old news. That decision was made to implement the new rules on Jan 4 and disclosed months ago.

Since the FAA required that the old rules be followed until Jan 4, 2014, even if a carrier implemented the new rules early, it was seen as a double whammy for scheduling and all its peripheral resources.

As NYC said, this is not a rumor and it was disclosed to the union and the pilot group months ago. There is no assumption of an extension. This is one area where I believe our company is leading the industry. (Go figure!). The rules will be implemented on Jan 4th and US Airways is one of the few that has been preparing and is ready for the changeover. Will there be unexpected glitches? Possibly. Will it be mass hysteria? Unlikely. With that said, if you don't want to be caught unaware by the new rules, you should start reading up now. Along with the booklet the company has put out, the union has written quite a few articles and has reference material available on the USAPA website.

Thanks NYC and Gunther, and I had no doubt about the previously announced 4 Jan date. But I was not very clear on that. The FAA inspector was indeed providing an opinion an extension was more than likely, and had the Company chose (as they have not) to implement the new rules earlier they would NOT be able to go back to the old rules even with the extension. It's a one way trip. My bad on trying to start a new thread on hearsay. I will officially retire from starting new threads due to my poor performance on this one. And by the way, I agree both our Company and USAPA are doing a good job at staying ahead on the new rules. The 117 booklet is well done. RR
