Republic Thinks It's Getting 140 MDA Pilots

Republic just filed with the FAA to skip some training checks for the ex-MidAtlantic pilots that it'll be getting.

The document is available here.

But my favorite sentence was at the beginning of the first paragraph on Page 3:

Republic anticipates that approximately 140 MidAtlantic pilots may accept offers to transition to Republic.

I think they'll be in for a surprise.

Of course, then they'll probably wind up cancelling flights due to lack of crew and screwing everything up for us just in time for the holidays. What a great operation they've got over there.

All I can say is Do What YOU Have to do.....the way you people have been treated is shameful. Why is it Management (at least around most airlines) is the L-A-S-T to figure it out? A sincere holiday wish to all the people at MDA- you certainly deserve better!

Does Republic have a habit of canceling flights due to crew shortages during the holidays?

We welcome the MDA pilots to come fly at REP; however, if they choose not to, then we will simply continue to grow and will work through the snags.

The aircraft are not being brought over all at once, but slowly through next year.

I don't know why I bother to respond when you didn't bother to read the link.

In it, they claim that if they don't get their training relief from the FAA, it will "[cause] disruptions to US Airways' schedule" and "adversely affect the carrier, as well as potentially US Airways Express, and the traveling public" "during the busy Christmas season".

Their own words.

One would imagine that a crew shortage would have the same effect as crew stuck in training.

I also wonder where they are gonna seem to pull 140 MAA pilots from?! Most of the pilots are not going over there. Actually, on almost every trip I have I meet or fly with or see a pilot that is leaving, but not going to Republic. All I have to say is..its gonna get real ugly over the holiday season...U needs to figure something out in the next few weeks..before they have 170's sittin during the holiday because they have no pilots....

Given the taco salad served by US management to the MDA guys, I'd get a nice grin watching it melt down if Rupaulblic couldn't staff those airplanes.

I have nothing against Republic, but please do not forget where you came from, at one point for a very long time we were your only codeshare and while I have nothing against you, please do not forget that without US Airways you would be nothing close to the size that you are now, actually you probably would not be in existance. The Republic family is probably our best Express partners but please do not bite the hand that feeds you.

Just heard today that Republic is not taking anymore 170's for atleast 12 months or more. I have not seen it in writing..but I trust my source and I beleive this to be true. Anyone else hear this? Also was told today that U will be getting those 190's in 6 months.

The pilot class at republic also was cancelled, so i was also told.

You heard correctly. The new plan is for US Airways/MDA to keep all the 170s. They will each be taken off line for two days while Embraer engineers and mechanics will cut the planes in half. Next they weld into place one 12 foot long piece of aluminum tubing. After a couple of cans of red, white, and blue Krylon, whalaaaa, a brand new E190 operated by Mid Atlantic.

The entire process for fleet modification will take six months.

Are you serious??? They are really gonna do that? You have got to be kidding.

190 has different motors, overwing exit, and a larger wingbox. You can't just throw plugs on the bird, like they did with the 767 program (200 to 300). You could probably do this to convert it to the 175 or a 190 to 195, but certainly not from 170 to 190 :p

I like the Krylon idea.

Heck, if they really want a theme plane, why not park a 757 down in downtown Philly and just let the taggers have a field day?

Who needs Peter Max when you've got Gangland One?

Man.

Does anyone know what sarcasm is?

Aerodynamically it would work.

Funny that this wasn't questioned:
"They will each be taken off line for two days..."
