Philly will get US Airways China flight

US Airways will announce this afternoon that its proposed China route will be from Philadelphia to Shanghai.

The airline is petitioning the U.S. Department of Transportation for the right to fly to China. Other airlines are competing as well. US Airways doesn't have any flights now to Asia and it doesn't have a plane that could fly that far.

US Airways has been negotiating with Air Canada to buy at least two Airbus A340-500 aircraft for the China route. If approved, that route would begin in a year.

How would US actually take this on if it did happen?

All for just two planes, they would have to do differences training, design a service, train in the service, and the biggest question, language speakers? Would they have to hire speakers? I doubt we have many Chinese speakers...

Would it be a two class or three class service? I don't think our current international service would cut it in the Asia market. It would be interesting to see how this all would work...

According to a Q and A post from corporate, this route will be awarded to a carrier that does not already serve China. So it will be between US and DL. We will get at least two aircraft to run the route, either Boeing 777's or Airbus A-340's.

Seems like you'd be cutting it close with only 2 aircraft to fly this route. Will the new A330-200's your getting have the range? And when are they coming to the fleet?

That's not correct at all. Either Corporate goofed or someone misinterpreted the answer.

The 2008 frequencies are available to all airlines, whether they be incumbents or new entrants. Nothing requries the DOT to award the rights to new entrants.

The 2007 frequencies, on the other hand, were available solely to the incumbents.

IMO, CO still has the best arguments, and DL and US will have a huge burden to overcome the CO application.

we will be getting a340-500's from air canada. if and only this route is approved. air canada only has 2 a340-500's which are the ones we are getting. they use it exclusively between yyz-hkg. same goes for usairways if we get shanghai. it will be exclusively for the phl-pudong route. if air canada can do it. so can usairways.

Air Canada has backups if one of those 2 A345's have to be pulled for Maint. But otherwise, sure. US can sub an A333 and make an ANC fuel stop.

The China flights are mostly full as is, so how easy would it really be to reroute a plane of 200+ passengers from PHL to Shanghai at a moment's notice.

Doesn't US have a back up flying to SJU in the summertime? The China flight would have to leave around Noon so maybe an early W/B from Europe. If the plane breaks down in China, its gonna be a mess anyway.

US can fly any mainline aircraft to SJU they want (except maybe the E190).

I was saying the SJU route usually has a 767 or A330 on it from either PHL/CLT. I was suggesting pulling that plane off that route. It wasn't about which planes could fly to SJU.

USAir should get this PHL-SHA route.

Same rationale as UA's IAD-BJS: new city pairings.

The issue of having the aircraft and/or expertise to successfully make money here is another thread...

It would be borderline miraculous if we are awarded this route. What a wet dream! I have better odds of winning the Powerball Lottery than ever seeing a US Airways jet on final approach into Shanghai.

The only thing our management knows about Chinese is PF Changs in Tempe.

Don't forget the Bourbon Chicken ladies in Philly that attack you. they are great for when you can't afford to eat... just go by a few times and keep getting samples.

What time of day is the usual departure and arrival times for flights to Asia from the east coast?

Typically, depart around Noon, arrive Asia 4:00 pm or so, 2-3 hours to clean, refuel, perform maintenance checks and depart Asia early evening, say 6:00 - 6:30 pm, arrive back at east coast about 5:00 - 6:00 pm.

That schedule format usually allows for decent connection opportunities on each end.
