Finnair will become MIA''s fifth oneWorld carrier when it resumes non-stop service between Miami and Helsinki, last flown in 1998, on 23 October 2003 with two weekly non-stops on Thursdays and Saturdays. Flights will operate with MD-11s. Originally, service will be seasonally, but year-round service as it has been in the past has not been ruled out. For oneWorld, this means the easiest connections between Miami/LatAm/Caribbean and Scandanvia, Russia, and the Far East.

Any word on arrival and departure times -- i.e., will the Finnair flights be timed to meet American's connecting banks in Miami?

Also, will passengers making international connections, such as someone flying HEL-MIA-MEX, for example, be required to clear U.S. Customs and Immigration before boarding their connecting flight or are there any transit facilities in Miami that they can use to avoid going through those formalities? Further, have security concerns since 9/11 affected the availability of transit facilities (assuming that such facilities existed before that date) at MIA?

AY 034 will leave Helsinki Vantaa at 1450 and arrive in Miami at 1815. Leaves Miami at 2050 and arrives back in Vantaa the next day at 1315.

For Helsinki-originating passengers it means very good connections to just about everywhere in South America and many major domestic destinations, most imporantly Orlando. Though Caribbean connections are limited - Kingston, San Juan, Santo Domingo, and Port of Spain. Though the outbound allows for connection from just about everywhere.

For Miami-originating, in Helsinki it means the easiest possible connections to Scandanvia and Russia. Also one of the most convienent routes between Miami and Bangkok/Far East (although Miami-Asia market is small, BKK is one the biggest Asia markets from Miami). Unfortunatley, the frequency does not allow easy connections to China (no China flights on FrSu), and Osaka leaves too early.

Yahoo, nothing to do with oneWorld, but Lufthansa starts daily Miami-Munich service with an A340-300 on 26 October 2003. Within a span of five days, Miami welcomes Finnair to Helsinki, El Al to Tel Aviv, and Lufthansa to Munich/Munchen.

For AA employees using their one-world passes, travel intra-Europe on our fellow oneworld carriers is really reasonable. Finnair might be a great way to get to Russia for those interested in going to St Petersburg or Moscow.

I highly encourage my fellow AA''ers to take AAdvantage of the oneworld travel benefits. The fare is based on mileage, which is more reasonable that ID90s on non one world carriers and you get a higher boarding priority. I''ve used Iberia, Qantas, and British Airways numerous times. British Airways treats you great, better than AA treats us some of the time.

Here is an example of the fare difference. I flew from Sydney to Tokyo last October and the ID90 on JAL was close to $300.00 and it was around $80 on Qantas after taxes and everything.
