Got this email from a friend of mine. If you can help out or know someone who can, please let me know.

<<Do you know anyone who is/was a TW/AA mechanic? I am working with a non profit humanitarian organization that owns a 747SP. The plane is coming to MCI for a C check and they are looking for volunteer mechanics (maybe some to be paid).>>

I can't believe there isn't one mechanic willing to donate a little time and expertise. I guess I'll just have to tell my friend that no one is interested enough in making a difference.

Sorry, I don't live in MCI but I did forward this to my contacts in MCI. Not sure what good it will do, most of the guys I know are on lay off and working out of the state. As you might have read, MCI is about to go through another round of layoffs and I am not sure how receptive they will be to this at this time. You might be better off trying to recruit some retirees. Good Luck

Believe me, with my furlough almost 2 years ago, I understand what is going on in MCI right now. It's like you've been kicked in the stomach and you're gasping for air. I truly sympathize with everyone.

i was just curious where they are going to do this c check? only two bays that can hold a 747 is bays 12 and 14. and aa does a 767 check in 12. and i cant see aa donating bay 12. they only two bays that aa are leasing are those two. plus i dont think mci has the tooling anymore to work on 747. when aa bought twa they came thru and scrap that stuff.

No offense, but any organization(good cause or not) that can afford to own a 747SP ought to be able to afford to pay for some mechanics to do a "C"-check. I'll bet the pilot's of this airplane are getting paid very well and they want their mechanics for free? This sounds like a big scam to me. That's one of the problems of this industry. We have multi-million dollar aircraft and they want free labor. Work for free on this airplane and the airlines will be demanding the same!

Ok fire away, call me all the names you want.

Princess-

I don't blame you one bit for being jaded, but my guess is the pilots are volunteers as well?

Princess, you are correct. An organization that owns a 747 should be able to pay AMTs for their skill. If they don't own the a/c the lease company should certainly afford to pay for the C Check.

No name calling.

Charitable humanitarian organizations utilize volunteer professionals all the time. This just leaves more money for the work that has to be done. I think you all have missed the point. Here is what is posted on their website about the 747 in case you didn't read it.

By creating an aviation arm to its organization, GPIs GPI Aviation and Global Peace One serve to foster the overall humanitarian efforts of GPIs team and the work of governments and other NGOs. A refurbished Boeing 747-SP aircraft dedicated fully to peace missions and humanitarian/disaster relief can respond to global crises in a matter of hours, not days.

By utilizing the graciousness of in-kind gifts of skilled professional aviation, technical and ground teams - GPI can fly cost efficiently. A combination of volunteer and paid staff on the GPI Aviation Team can prepare, load and deliver over 76,000 pounds of cargo and board up to 99 doctors/nurses or other critical relief staff from the United States to places like India, Indonesia, Europe, Africa or Japan without stopping to refuel. In addition, the Global Peace One 747-SP has the ability to land on shorter runways than larger cargo or passenger jets. The speed of this Boeing aircraft cuts flight times and the lead times for emergency relief.

By availing the Global Peace One to world leaders, GPI can facilitate shuttle diplomacy with peacemakers from various regions of the planet. GPI sees the Global Peace One and other aspects of GPI Aviation as a way to share an asset with the corporate and NGO world to achieve positive goals for mankind.

from my friend who asked me to help find mechanic volunteers after reading your responses...

The plane was donated to Global Peace, they did not buy it. Pilots, flight attendants, catering, fuel is all donated as is the hanger. These people are certainly bitter..

With the aviation industry in such dire straights over here, this organization should go find some of the outsourcers in Asia/Singapore/Malaysia to get free labor for their aircraft. Lots of 747s and the tooling to do checks there.

A true humanitarian. You give real meaning to the term "Ugly American".

This is hardly a scam. I fly on this plane, I work for free. There are already 4 retired TW mechanics who have volunteered. Hangar space HAS been donated. Additionally, the plane was DONATED to Global Peace. If some of you naysayers would take the time to read the GPI website you would see that money is used elsewhere. Greed is certainly NOT attractive. Keep in mind that the original post indicated some free some paid! Hey, you want to sit home and eat Beanie Weenie out of a can, not my problem. Or you could contact GPI, offer your time but suggest that you could use some money. Remember this is a humanitarian organization, they do good things. The leader of GPI lives in a VERY MODEST house in Houston. Please do not make assumptions. Asking reasonable questions is better.
