I am a ground mechanic- 400 hz. gpu's, jetbridges and the bag system, for a major. I have an interview with SW as a baggage handler. I applied as a mech for a postion in Houston, but didn't get called. My question is, does SW show preference in hiring transfers from within the co. once you make probation? Also, if you are part time, can you give away and pick up shifts? thanks to anyone that can help.

first off we don't hire part time. All ramp positions are full time. After your first month with the comapany you can start picking up and giving away shifts. To keep your benefits you must work at least 40 hours per month. After you complete 6 months with the company you can transfer to another station and after a year you can make a transfer to another department within the company.

Ground Mx is sprinkled all over the WN system. Once you're in thats Most of the battle. Keep in mind though you may have to move to a different city to get into Ground Maintenance at first, then bid back to you desired city once there is an opening and you have enough seniority to carry it. Ground Maintenance falls under Ramp and operations but the mechanics are AMFA not TWU like the ramp, and they (mechanics) have a 5 year top out. I have seen guys from the ramp cross over to maintenance quite a bit so; do your time, stay out of trouble, and the sky is the limit for you here.

Yea listen to bubbleboy. I'd get in and keep a eye on Philly as we will grow there quick. We have already posted 3 line mech positions for up there, so you know they will be adding other slots soon.

Im sure most any GSE slots will be filled locally, so if you're already in the company you can put in for any job there and get it before they hire off the street. I know all the guys we hired here at BWI for GSE were locals, Im not sure if any were internal transfers though.

Thanks for the help. At my co. plant maintenance is sub divided into facilities/automotive- same seniority but different shop. At any rate I'll go to the interview, I assumed transfers work more or less the same as here. Nothing against working the ramp, I did here for years, but I like maintenance and wanted to know what the options were.
