More service from CLT and PHL

TEMPE (US Daily) - In addition to our new routes at DCA, today we announced that we’ll begin serving Omaha, Neb. (OMA) and Des Moines, IA (DSM) from CLT starting March 25. We’ll also begin seasonal summer service between PHL and Salt Lake City, UT (SLC) on May 24 and will add another daily flight between PHL and St. Louis, Mo. (STL), Nashville, Tenn. (BNA), Houston, TX (IAH), Albany, NY (ALB), Bangor, ME (BGR) and Indianapolis, Ind. (IND) starting March 25.

It'll be interesting to see if DL responds to the PHL-SLC move. They could add another PHL-SLC flight, or if they want to get mean - a 2nd PHL-LAX flight, or even meaner - replace the 757 with a 767 on CDG (US uses a 332), or start NRT - now that would put a pin in Parker's ego. However, DL may already have excellent G2 on any potential US-AA tie up and feel a response is strategically not necessary. Some of these actions may seem a bit irrational (from a US standpoint), but DL's inventory and history could support a potential dramatic response - even if for a short period.

Look at the bright side. You could be on CO Express EWR-TUL for 3h05m in the ever popular EMB 145! Unless they changed the A/C from when I did that trip.

At least on the flying pencil, you stand a chance of a single seat and not rubbing shoulders with a hefty stranger.

CLT-DSM shows a PSA CRJ-200..... No F/C on a 2hr40min flight.
CLT-OMA shows a PSA CRJ-700..... 2hrs 45mins WITH F/C.

Surprise, surprise.

If they could get a CRJ to make it, they would probably fly them to Europe and Hawaii.

I do not like RJ flying over mainline and I understand the concerns from a consumer and employee perspective. However, I believe the new CLT & PHL Express flying is a result of the Slot Transaction, Bankruptcy DIP/Exit Financing, and post bankruptcy Fee for Service Agreements.

During bankruptcy II US Airways came within $10 million of violating its minimum cash requirements, which could have created an involuntary liquidation.

To remain in business US Airways negotiated extended Fee for Service RJ agreements with Republic and Air Wisconsin in exchange for DIP/Equity financing. Without this capital Doug Parker indicated US Airways would have liquidated and the company's employees would not have their present jobs.

These Fee for Service agreements are in place today with terms that exist for a few more years, which requires US Airways Express to operate this contract flying. There are more LGA Express ASMs than can be flown with the new DCA slots and US Airways is required to operate the Air Wisconsin/Republic Fee For Service flying. Therefore, I suspect you will see some of the post Slot Transaction LGA Express ASMs transferred and flown in and out of PHL & CLT.

Separately, US Airways EVP of People Elise Eberwein recently told me that US Airways would like to add beyond perimeter service from DCA to SAN, LAX, and SFO once the FAA reauthorization bill is passed (assuming this expanded service remains in both versions of the bill once it reaches the Conference Committee), which I assume would be operated with either B757s or A319s.

Doug Parker had nothing to do with that, he wasnt in control and the companies were two separate companies till after US exited bankruptcy.

The merger was driven by Lakefield and Seabury.
