Strange facts….

Agents in smaller cities have to multitask. They have to be current on all station functions and responsibilities, and have to work all of them daily.

Agents have to be self starters able to handle any situation, often alone.

Small markets cater to the valuable business traveler, discount hunters drive to LCC cities.

Small markets bring higher fares.

Smaller cities have far fewer agents, therefore they stay busy all day.

Why is it ……..

Why do they think it’s wise to pay express “povertyâ€￾ wages in these cities. You end up with high employee turn over. Agents that are less dedicated to the company (and if you think different your wrong, I have spoken to CO & AA express employees). A business travler that's a little disapointed. What’s up with this?

Deltawatch,

Good questions.

In small stations, agents have to be w&b qualified, can operate airstart units, deice and work all functions. They also may have to handle freight, which exposes you to the Dept. of Agriculture( animals, plants and foodstuffs), DOT (haz-mat), FAA (security), and US Customs (international). They get to clean the RON's (TSA can getcha there).

There are certainly some agents in large stations that can do this, but not all, or nearly all. Training costs would be exorbitant.

I've always been curious as to how stations are classified and staffed... what are the parameters to make them a mainline, cross-trained, Express, mainline express, MAA station... does it go by amount of flights, aircraft type, or what? How is pay detrmined? I think alot of us would like to be enlightened on how it works.

i know that mainline express cities are the ones where you can work a large number of express flights plus up to but no more than 2 mainline jets while paying you the crappy sorry wages of the express. and there is no telling as to how many more or even what cities will be nailed by these unrealistic mgmt team of ccy
until it is way too late. and when the city goes get ready to go on welfare and collect unemployment as the hrs also suck with the pay.

Robbeagain: I just finally have to say something. So often, posters on here have ligimate questions and concerns. We are all trying to find answers and reasoning to this whole charade that is ongoing. Many posters have interesting things to say, many have questions and comments and many have bitches.

Well , in your case, and please don't take this as a personnal attack, but you just always seem to be depressed and angry. Granted, I am not privy to your personal situation. I gather you have a very young child you are trying to support and care for, with the help of family. I applaud you. I can identify with your situation. I am sorry, that USAirways has put such hardship into your life.

I guess, what I am trying to say, for your sake....is Lighten up a little. :D   :)

I agree that the employess in smaller stations are more productive than others. Given the Multi tasks performed, the company gets more for their buck and wants to pay less for it. In fleet you get agents who unload/load, cater, pushback, deice and clean the A/C as well as working W&B and the bagroom. Not even SWA can top that amount of productivity for the dollar. Yet these people are the target of the LOWEST wages in the company as well as the Industry including other Express Carriers. Lets face the facts here, what the company has taken out of these peoples wages will not even put a dent in the companys finanacial woes. Why don't they fix some of the real problems instead of picking on the minority of the workforce. Any now we are faced with yet another hit in wages...Give me a break already.

Wings, I was looking at theJune schedule for ABE, Enjoy the EMB170.
It looks like you will have the A319 to CLT and TWO EMB170's to PHL.
Having been up close and personal with that aircraft, it is nothing less then an Baby Airbus. Enjoy even more work for the less pay....
