I heard rumors today that AA will be announcing that they are going to ground 80 MD-80's

Any word on how that relates to Pilots and flight attendant numbers? I don't know, but I would think it will not effect the ground crews and mechanics to a large extent unless its concentrated in a few stations.

What kind of "non airworthy" problems are there now?
Theirs no problem with the aircraft.Money losing routes/record jet fuel. Also carrier's that what AA off of those route's.So lower the price and keep sticking it to the last of the legency carrier's till they jump to their next level of fuel cost.Plus some of these aircraft are 80,000 flight hours old,too costly to keep flying.;)

I have mixed feelings posting this, because I DO NOT want any of you to be (re) furloughed again.
And I KNOW, that you believe me when I say that !!

Remembering when AA(around 1980-1983ish) was faced with a (somewhat different) situation,.......they took the (sadly) necessary steps, and Shrunk the airline drastically.
(I remember BOS going down to "11" flights a day)

It appears that, that is (sadly) whats needed now, meaning GROUND as many S-80's as Humanly possible !

Pull A/E off of certain routes, and try to fly as many Mainline routes(with them) as possible.

AMR does afterall, have a SH!Tload of 50 seaters, and (some) 70 seaters.
(kind of a trickle down effect, right down to the last 37 seater)

GOOD LUCK TO ALL !!!!!!!!!!

Bear as of 4th/qtr. 2007....

24-MD-80 .. are being scrapped. 12-owned by AA, 5- Capital Lease, 7- Operating leases.

AA has 300 MD-80's, probably (minus) the above 24 being scraped.

I wouldn't doubt for one minute, AA will ground a number of S-80 due to fuel/load factors/ declining economy. Why put up the expense in personnel, Fuel, if it is a loose-loose, no matter where it flys.

I see layoffs coming. It only makes common sense, that AA is not going to burn their cash hord, of flying aircraft for the fun of it. I would tell eveyone, to get their house in order, and prepare.

Bingo!
see the same thing myself only w/o the 135's or SF3's - why because the 6% ASM cap in the TWU Contract. The company proposal would have mitigated the impact on AE.

Since this is a Rumor Topic...
80's will be parked.
Layoffs beginning in September.
First wave of headhunting cut back to 97 seniority.
Legit or another scare tactic by the Union/Company ?

AA HAS to do some serious cutting.. With the price of fuel, they have no choice. I believe a considerable amount of aircraft will be grounded. They cannot continue on this path. They have been raising airfares in the form of a fuel surcharge. They need to keep raising airfares because passengers should not be exempt from rising fuel costs as the airlines have long thought because they did not want to lose customers.

Having said this, you cannot just ground aircraft without cutting flights and laying people off.

AA has been quite used to having its employees share the sacrifice to keep the airline flying. Well guess what? OUR COST OF LIVING IS ALSO RISING WHETHER FOR FOOD OR FUEL..

NO MORE CONCESSIONS AND NO INSULTING CONTRACT PROPOSALS..

SHRINK IF YOU CAN'T SUCCESSFULLY RUN THE WORD'S LARGEST AIRLINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The "LUCKY TO HAVE A JOB" mantra is tired and old and has run its course.

Just FYI...
The bidsheet allocation for June shows 147 fewer bid lines for f/as systemwide than the May bidsheet.
And, this is going into the Summer travel season!!!

Though I don't know how many a/c that represents, it is 49 fewer lines of flying (3 f/as per line) systemwide than in May. And, so it begins.

AA still has 300 active MD-80s even after the 24 retirements.

eolesen mentioned that a Ch 11 filing would likely occur once oil hit $80 or $100 so that AA could reject the leases (more than half of the MD-80s are leased). AA managed to keep them flying without a bankruptcy filing up til now, even though oil is approaching $130/bbl. I'm guessing that AA parks a bunch of them in September unless oil plummets this summer.

Yea tell that to the TWU. All they want to do is preserve jobs (union dues). They have to realize that jobs will be cut and thats a fact. Now convince the membership of this especially the ones with the threat of being layed off or displaced from their class 2 station.

Scare tactics to get a yes vote.

Let the games begin!
