Lets notb forget this one:
FOR IMMEDIATE POSTING
January 17, 2003
TO: All AA TWU Local President and Members
Dear Sisters & Brothers:
As you are by now aware, yesterday American Airlines notified your International Union that they would like to enter a “collaborative program of information sharing and problem solving†and “pledge to devote the resources necessary to conduct weekly meetings.†This is in order to provide us with the latest financial and industry data and to seek and consider ideas on how best to move forward.
We notified Mr. Carty and Mr. Arpey yesterday that my staff assigned to American Airlines and I would be available at their request to meet on Monday, January 20. As always, I am open-minded to any collaborative process that benefits our members, as well as the Company. Most of you are aware from your Local President’s reports that we have had a number of attempts to work collaboratively in various venues, including Standards Meetings, with limited results. In some cases, months go by without follow-up or a resolve from American Airlines. In addition, a number of our Presidents and members have participated in a variety of cost savings exercises pointing out waste and excessive billing by sub-contractors, yet the practice continues.
It is also difficult to enter meaningful collaborative discussions at this time when American Airlines is one of the aggressive leaders in funding CESTA (Committee for Economic Strength through Aviation). CESTA was established for the purpose of lobbying Congress in support of Senator John McCain’s proposed amendments that require an Arbitration Panel to select the last, best offer from Management or Labor. As Ed Wytkind, Executive
Director of the AFL-CIO Transportation Trades Department stated, “It’s about getting the upper hand on their workers.â€
As I have previously stated, we will be open-minded in any discussion that will benefit our member’s quality of life, but we will not make any decisions that are unrealistic where our members and their families are asked to carry the burden. Our current agreement with American Airlines is amendable March 1, 2004.
Sincerely & fraternally,
James C. Little
Director Air Transport Division
Intl. Administrative Vice President
