There was a time back in the old days when we even flew from Boston to Frankfurt. The below excerpt was from an article back in 1995.
With the amount of service we have in BOS, consideration should be given
to initiating service to some of these long distance destinations once again.

USAIR PLANS SYSTEM CAPACITY CUT
USAir said it will cut capacity by 5 percent, or 240 daily flights, by July as another part of its effort to regain profitability.
At the same time, USAir said it would add 70 new flights, including service from Philadelphia and Boston to Frankfurt and from Charlotte to the West Coast.
Many of the planned cutbacks will be on routes where passenger loads have been consistently low, explained company Chairman Seth Schofield. A number of these routes will be taken over by USAir Express carriers. Especially hard hit will be intra-Florida routes currently served by jets, a carrier spokesman said.
By July, point to point flights will comprise less than 10 percent of the carrier's system, USAir said. The new capacity plan instead will emphasize the core strength of the carrier's hub system, built around Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Philadelphia and Baltimore.
Schofield said the substitution of regional aircraft in numerous markets "will enable us to remain a part of communities that USAir has been serving for years." The reshuffling of routes will result in a savings of more than $100 million annually, he said.
