NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- JetBlue Airways Corp. (NasdaqNM:JBLU - News) August traffic more than doubled to 688.8 million revenue-passenger miles from 338.4 million a year earlier, on a 95% capacity increase.
A revenue-passenger mile is one paying passenger flown one mile.
In a press release Thursday, the low-fare carrier said the 104% traffic growth for the month came as load factor, or percentage of seats filled, edged up 4 points to 90.5%.
For the first eight months of the year, traffic rose 112% to 4.26 billion revenue-passenger miles, on a 104% capacity hike. Load factor rose to 84.6% from 81.5%.
Rival low-fare airline Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE:LUV - News) said Wednesday its August passenger traffic fell 0.7% to 4.3 billion revenue-passenger miles from 4.4 billion a year earlier, despite 3.5% capacity growth. Southwest warned that September bookings look weak.
Shares of JetBlue recently traded at $38.85, down 4 cents, or 0.1%, on Nasdaq volume of 159,900 shares. Average daily volume is 278,420 shares.
