Is Sju Up For Grabs?

It seems that JetBlue will be in SJU for the long haul. US Airways has increased flights and destinations unto SJU. Song also entered the SJU market. UA announced new flights from SJU too.

Has AA relinquished it's grip on SJU? Is SJU up for grabs?

One thing is for sure, AA is loosing a tremendous opportunity for not putting larger aircraft on their MIA/SJU routes. Out of their several daily flights, they could stand to put 67's or 77's on at least a couple of them if not more.

Right now AA operates 7 flights from MIA-SJU 3 of those are A-300's and 1 767. Starting in Dec the route goes to 8 flights a day. Add 4 non-stops a day from FLL-SJU and I think you will see that AA really dominates the market. As far as AA losing its grip on SJU, well one flight to IAD from UA and a couple of flights from other carriers really don't added up to much. AA starts a non-stop SJU-LAX in DEC on the weekends and with all the connecting traffic at SJU AA really will continue to dominate SJU for the time being. I think it will be interesting to see how well the new flights from FLL will do. Amazing that FLL-LAX now up to 4 nonstops a day on 757 and went out full this weekend. I think AA is starting to nibble away at DL's dominance at FLL. Rumour has it that AA is pulling 20 S-80's back into service next year. Hopefullly additional flights will continue to be added at MIA/FLL.

I think FLL/SJU does so well because many passengers are fed up with Miami, not AA in MIA, but Miami as in Dade Airport Authority. Between parking, security, lack of air conditioning and the general falling apart of many areas of the airport, FLL is hassle free by comparisson.

I would like to see AA pick up at least a daily to SJU from Orlando. Sorry to hear about the S80s, those air-tanks aren't my favorite ride and maintenance issues alone make me double check the type of aircraft when making reservations.

Now, if AA really wants to please a lot of people, passengers and employees alike, they need to crank up the daily nonstop MIA/SEA again, and soon, and not with some sardine can 737. That route deserves AA attention, and it deserves at least a 67. Those asia bound passengers being cranked through DFW or ORD aren't being taken seriously enough. Alaska Air is gonna kick butt on that route eventually.

American Airlines is definitley making thier presence stronger in Ft. Lauderdale. They are now the #3 carrier, and are very well on track to pass #2 Southwest as soon as late December. I've heard rumours that the FLL growth will continue. It allows American Airlines to retain important Miami area customers who are tired of MIA/located more convienently to FLL. American tried to get the route authority exemption to fly Lauderdale-Bogota after Aces' was liquidated, but it went, (no surprise), to Avianca. I have heard that possible flights to Washington/National and San Jose, Costa Rica are being looked at from Lauderdale.

This winter, American Airlines will offer up to 38 daily flights from Lauderdale to Dallas, O'Hare, St. Louis, San Juan, Boston, LaGuardia, Los Angeles, Caracas, Santo Domingo, Port-Au-Prince, Nassau, and Raleigh. Without coincidence, all of these destinations rank among the 25 largest O&D pairs from the Miami area. MIA-CCS, MIA-PAP, MIA-SDQ, and MIA-NAS are all among the top 50 international O&D pairs in the United States (so are MIA-SJO, MIA-MAD, MIA-GRU, and MIA-LHR). I hope that AA keeps on growing at FLL (as well as MIA). It is a smart move to keep thier customer base.

The new D expansion opens in a few short days: 15 November 2003. The rest should be done by mid-2006.
