House chairman gives 'hell no' vote to Delta merger

On one hand, you've got to figure that Anderson/Steenland are VERY familiar with Jim Oberstar.

On the Other hand, I Warned of this(J O) the very day that the first hint of DL/NW surfaced.

And finally, "JO" may very well be the reason that Anderson has UAL at "the ready", if trying to do a deal with BIG RED becomes TOO difficult.

LET the Games BEGIN

Please don't make me laugh Oberstar thinks the world revolves around him. Will hearings be called yes they will and they will all act like they will stop it. Bush meanwhile has shown that his entire administration very rarely listens to anything both sides say or do on capitol hill.

FL meanwhile thinks this will be a slot bonanza when the HP US merger did not include any slot givebacks.

Bottom line the businessman call the real shots and know exactly who to talk to to get this deal approved and Oberstar is not one of them. They already have most of the southern delegation ready to support this.

Isn't that why the airlines are moving on merger this year? They wanted it done this year with a friendly (Republican) DOJ. I don't think Jim Oberstar can't kill this deal, but admittedly he can sure make some noise. Concerning another roadblock, the bond agreements with Minnesota, I would think they could easily be refinanced with the reported money Air France is willing to lend. Just a thought.

Congress can hold hearings until the cows come home, but it will be the FAA and/or the Justice Department who make the decision pro or con on the merger based on current law.

The only way Oberstar (or anyone else in Congress) could prevent the merger would be to get a law prohibiting mergers drafted, passed, and signed by Bush in the next 3 weeks. Considering how little Congress has been able to do in this entire session, that is, at the least, highly unlikely. First off, he would have the opposition of Southern delegations who are pro-Delta.

He opposes mergers because consumers would pay higher fares? He doesnt seem to be concerned about employees(also consumers) losing pensions or being able to feed their families. He also needs to learn about supply and demand. Anyone want to send him a copy of your airlines fuel bill? Mama

Oberstar may have some influence, but I seriously doubt he wields enough power to back up his inflated ego. Don't get me wrong, I hope he kills this thing just as much as he wants to. I just get tired of hypocritcal and loud mouth politicians. He doesn't care about the employees any more than NW management does, and I have serious doubts that he would posses the same outspoken tenacity in regards to stopping a proposed DL/UA merge.

Forgot to add the support DL /NW will get from UT who as the only western hub in a combined network could have more growth prospects.

As for the other states KY/OH and TN will probably wait to see what the DL/NW mgmt plans are for them.

Don't forget both DL/NW are not in bankruptcy and do not wield the same ability to reject leases that US did. If they were to shutter a hub or hub it will probably be gradual as opposed to a "Pittsburgh Punch".

This is where I wonder about LCC and Parker.

If LCC were to go to NW and say:

Ok, we'll give you NW's brand, NW's systems, NW's alliance, NW's HQ, NW's hubs, NW's fleet plan....... and maybe... maybe NW's execs. Oh, and plus all LCC's cash, and, surely, the almost complete absence of Fed problems and few other governmental obstacles. But, you have to take our labor problems and market positions. Of course, the market positions can be re-structured... not much restructuring needed.

How does that balance out? Is the labor monster so big that it overshadows all this other stuff? Does the above list have much value at all? The other big factor is the LCC doesn't have as extensive a SA and TATL op as DL.

How much value to the transaction would a Nic settlement add?

US will not bring the trans Atlantic presence that DL does. If you listen to Northwest Air Lines you will hear them discuss pulling down domestic capacity, not adding any.

"luv2"

Correct, would Oberstar be as tenacious in a DL/UAL deal ???
Which is why I honestly think that Anderson has UAL, AND GLEN TILTON, "on the back burner"

NOTE:.......IN MY OPINION......UAL IS CAPABLE OF OPERATING ON IT'S OWN !!!!!

(The above, was put in, so a certain F/A doesn't think I'm dissing UAL) !!!

Right.
In my opinion, THEY ALL CAN STAND ALONE! NW beat Wall Streets forecast and had a better profit/loss then perdicted. Why would anyone let any of these airlines merge? They are proving economics is not an issue.

So how long should the legacies limp along without combining? They clearly aren't thriving. At some point, the employees will recognize that huge profits = a chance at higher wages, and if huge profits don't return, their chances of recovering what they lost in the first half of this decade will be delayed even longer.

It won't be too long before the financial disaster will have spanned an entire decade. How long should legacy airline employees wait?
