Fargo Pursuing America West

What?

They're not going to spend the money trying to get SWA to serve them?

Or did SWA flat-out laugh in their faces while telling them that Fargo is WAAAAY too small to have the darling-of-the-industry airline serve their meager needs.

I noticed that Lawton OK got a big grant also to try to secure a second carrier. AA Eagle already servers DFW from LAW. What a big waste of govt money. Looks like they want Delta to serve ATL. I wonder if you could do a wrap like PHX-OKC-LAW-PHX and still qualify for the grant money?

Fargo, yeah, because everyone wants to go there in the winter!

Maybe after we start service to Moosejaw and Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, I think Bumblebee, Arizona and Plaster City, California are next on the list though.

Me thinks that the folks in Fargo rejected the concept of the SW "cattle call" boarding system. :p

AW, where you get great value AND respect.

FARGO is wanting you guys?

Oh man, that is great!!

It's Fargo, ND? Oh, I thought it was Fargo BANK.

Never mind.

Laugh all you want, but America West submitted an LOI supporting Fargo's grant application that said they will start service if Fargo got the grant. Expect PHX-FAR to launch within six months.

And, besides, Fargo service in the winter makes perfect sense. How else does everbody get out?

I had the unfortunate task of opening up a station there for a prior Express airline.

did i mention someone thought it was a GREAT idea to start service in February??!!!???

... and now I live very very VERY far away from the nearest deicer.... *breathes a sigh of relief*

... makes note to do whatever possible to avoid a Glycol bath...

Of course HP will take it, Fargo is the new Number 1 US Destination in winter travel...you can see snow and fields and some more snow and some more fields... :p

All joking aside, what will the promotion/advertising be for this new destination? This'll be a toughy.

It's all about costs. SWA generally won't open a city unless it can support a minimum of 8 flights per day. After the first flight of the day, each additional flight is adds only minimal incremental costs.

Fargo is a nice city. It is well run but is also realistic about its air service needs. Combined service between Northwest (NWA/Mesaba) and United Express (SkyWest/AirWisc) is only 15 flights/day, the majority being on RJs. (Oh, let's not forget Allegiant starting two-flights-a-week service to LAS!) If there's a market for 8 737s a day it's well hidden!

Simple. One billboard saying, "Non-stops to PHX." Come winter, the rest takes care of itself. :)

As someone who spent plenty of time working in the upper midwest, I can tell you that as a (very) simple rule, leisure traffic is divided in thirds between Vegas, Florida, and Arizona.

Of course they will take the grant money and start service. The unfortunate thing for the passengers is that HP will run crappy Mesa jets on the route and provide horrid service which has become the trademark of Mesa Airlines, just as they have done in BIL and other small/medium markets.
