Fares Falling
ARLINGTON (theHub.com) - The Department of Transportation has introduced a new "Air Travel Price Index" (ATPI) and reports that airline ticket prices dropped 3.2 percent in the three years between the third quarter of 2000 and the same period in 2003.
DOT's Bureau of Transportation Statistics said it hopes the new index will provide new information that differs from the already available average ticket prices and passenger yield data, Aviation Daily reported.
The ATPI is calculated from actual transactions reported in the bureau's quarterly origin and destination survey and accounts for discount and Internet fares that are not always included in other measures of airline prices.
