Pilots and tenants of Falcon Field Airport have formed an organization committed to preserving the airport's status as one of the top general aviation airports in the country.
Edward F. Murphy and Larry Ryerson, who helped organize the Falcon Field Tenants and Users Association, told 79 people who turned out for the group's inaugural meeting Wednesday night that the association supports airport development that enhances flying.
In December, the city hired a commercial real estate firm to expedite the development of 92 acres at the airport, which is the 15th busiest general aviation airport in the country.
Although such businesses are required to be aviation-related under Federal Aviation Administration rules, airport director Corinne Nystrom has said they could include hotels and other services used by fliers and airport customers.
The association will monitor plans for the airport's development, Murphy said, but the group has no plans to lock horns with the city.
"We're an advocacy group, not an adversarial one," he said in an interview, and assured those at the meeting that the association was not formed to harp about the past and conduct "gripe sessions."
