Effort Seeks to Repeal Vestige of Regulation (RedNova)

By Stacie Hamel, Omaha World-Herald, Neb. Dec. 2--Southwest Airlines soon will begin nonstop flights between Kansas City International Airport and Dallas Love Field, and Omaha airport officials are worried that those cheaper fares will draw passengers away from Eppley Airfield.

Nebraska's Congressional delegation has just been given a wake up call to increase their effort to get that state exempted from the Wright Amendment too.

SWA already serves MDW, STL, LAS, and PHX from Omaha. While the Dallas-bound traffic may be the first to be drawn toward MCI it won't take long before folks realize that there are 16 other non-stop destinations available on SWA from MCI.

(Interestingly, earlier this year AA dropped its OMA-DFW walk-up fares by 42% and the 7-day advance by 17% in an apparent effort to get Nebraska's congressmen to reconsider their support of repealing the Wright Amendment.)

I don't think the OMA floks have too much to worry about. If KC were as close to Omaha as, say, Lincoln, or even Des Moines is, then they would have cause to fret.
But, according to my AAA atlas it is 194 road miles between the two cities (I know, it's a bit less to MCI since it's on the north side of KC).
A one or even two hour drive would siphon off a lot more business than a three hour drive will. IMHO, of course...

Actually, I call it "St Joseph international" since it seems like it is closer to St. Joe than southern Kansas City. It really isn't that long of a drive to Omaha.

Anyone that drives that far to the airport, when there is one in their own backdoor is a moron considering the price of gas to actually drive there, including tolls!! pay the extra $100 bucks you will save minimum six hours and possibly some extra dough, and you won't have to fly on a plane that has so much trailer trash on it... Ding, you are now free to go to MO, but ? who wants to???? Not me!

Missouri is a better place because of that....

But you know, considering the one way OMA-DFW unrestricted fare is $604, and the unrestricted, fully refundable fare out of MCI is $250, it might be worth the drive.
