Fearful of being stranded in Costa Rica, a reader decides to make her own way home
In the fall, I took a one-week vacation to Costa Rica. I was to fly back from San José to Charlotte, and then connect to a flight to Philadelphia, my final destination. Unfortunately US Airways canceled the flight to Charlotte an hour after it was due to depart (the airport was closed because a small aircraft was stuck on the runway with a flat tire).
After waiting in a long line to rebook, I spoke with an agent who said that the earliest flight I could return home on was a week later—one week!
