American Eagle will increase its service in eastern New Mexico with four nonstop flights per week from Los Angeles International Airport to the Roswell International Air Center.

The new service starts Aug. 25. American Eagle is the regional affiliate of American Airlines. This is in addition to the three, daily, round-trip flights now offered between Dallas/Fort Worth and Roswell. The new service will be operated with 44-seat Embraer ERJ-140 regional jets.

What's in/near Roswell that would justify 25 flights/week? I'll be honest, the only thing I know about Roswell is the Area 51(?) rumors, and I'm not even sure if the area number is right.

Jim: What justifies all those flights? ROW, the final resting place for all those MD-80s and AB6s that are sent to retirement. Gotta have something to shuttle all those pilots back to civilization after those final ferry flights.

Seriously, though, Roswell is a hopping little town, far away from other commercial service.

Carlsbad Cavern is not too far away which is a great tourist destination. How about Guadalupe Mountain National Park and White Sands missile range?

Area 51 is in Nevada Jim.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I believe Roswell, with its large and abandoned military facility, has become another storage and rework location for MROs and airlines.

IIRC, Eagle's done this before as a way to bridge aircraft back and forth from LAX to DFW for B checks.

I also recall reading something about a lot of oil and gas exploration in the area and it becoming a big place with that going on.... plus it is home to the largest mozzarella factory in the world.... :) - i pulled that last one from wikipedia.
