BA asks staff to work for nothing

British Airways is asking thousands of staff to work for nothing, for up to one month, to help the airline survive.

The appeal, sent by e-mail to more than 30,000 workers in the UK, asks them to volunteer for between one week and one month's unpaid leave, or unpaid work.

We actually did this at UAL a couple of years back.
Everyone is hurting.

British Airways asks staff to work for free

British Airways has asked its 40,000 staff to work without pay for up to a month as the ailing airline seeks to cut costs.

The group, which made a record £401 million loss in 2008 amid surging fuel prices and a collapse in premium-fare passengers, is seeking to reduce costs dramatically and has already offered staff unpaid leave or a reduction in hours.

BA has asked employees to work for free for a month.

Would you do it if it helped save your company? Oh I forgot, we already did that.

Any company that has to ask should be shuttered. How cowardly. At least we made them fight the fight. It's called WORK not charity.

How long before freedom volunteers to be the first to work for free? 1...2...3...

Yes there was a time i would have volunteered to work for free if i thought it could save our company .... That was then , this is now ... i won't work for free for us airways because we cannot be saved ... Our time is coming .....

As i see it there is only one hope for our work force and that's nationalzation ...

What is the flow-through from this? Do employees ask their landlord or mortgage company for a free months rent? Do they ask the local grocer for free food for a month?

This is a stupid idea, so why hasn't DP asked for it yet?

When will we be free?

I won't be long... I can see it now. It'll have some cute name like "pulling for success," there'll be a memo or two fostering groupthink to pressure people into it, etc.

Oh wait! They already did it when they asked employees to come in and clean planes for free!

how is someone covered for medical insurance or workmans comp.. if they are providing their services free of charge and voluntarily giving up pay.. in the event they just happen to become injured at work? (would that not also include insurance benefits or any injury claim be forfeited.. if someone is also forfeiting pay?)

I wonder if someone would be covered for any injury or would they be totally responsible for it all?

While I think it's deplorable to ask (coerce) employees into working for free for a month, I find it a little less reprehensible than asking them to take a 12% paycut indefinitely (sorta like the actual results at UA, US, AA, NW and DL). Marginally more attractive to give up pay for a short, fixed period of time than what appears to be "forever" pay cuts.
