It was virtually the last order of business I handled after my father died in December: transferring his frequent-flier balances into my mother's accounts. Because both my parents were longtime members of Delta, United and American airlines' frequent-flier programs, I thought shifting the balances would be quick and easy. I was wrong on both counts.

Cliff notes version....

All major carriers but Northwest let you bequeath FF miles.

American & US Airways charge $50 to transfer the miles.

All carriers that allow transfers require documentation - death certificate, will, etc.

Writer was given erroneous information initially by US Airways DM Desk.
