This was already posted over in the aviation chatter page (sorry, mods!). Though I'd list it here since Allegheney /USAir was big operator of the type. This is not a cheap date, folks. I sure can't spend that much. But it does look like fun!

When did these planes leave the fleet? Sometime in '89 or so?

My first flight ever was on a Braniff BAC 1-11 in 1966. I was expecting a big plane, but it seemed like a bus with wings.

...and hence the name "Airbus" was born!! Brilliant!!

But never was a bus built that sounded like THE ROCKET !!

I'd love to fly on that one. I had a chance a few years ago to fly on a YS-11, but the airline was very dodgy (Phuket Air) and I had some misgivings. But then I flew the equally dodgy Lao Airlines (but it was a semi new ATR-72)

You folks ever get tired of living in the past ?

I flew both the cv580 and the bac111. They had one thing in common that is an improvement over any airplane we fly now....they both had no overhead storage other than a hatrack at least until they put overhead bins in the 111 so you didn't have tons of baggage hanging over your head. Not forgetting the past is not the same as living in the past.

That would be nice to fly in one of those again.
I remember loading the bags in those, PITA, it was like working in a coffin.

Great period photo, especially for those stuck in the past...
