I'm just about to finish up highschool and I've just started my flight training for my PPL. I haven't really looked at colleges much, but I've heard that there's some out there where you can get a 4 year degree while getting flight hours/commercial license/ratings.

Does anyone know of any of these colleges or recommend any of them? I live in Texas and I'd like to stay close to home, but anything is worth looking into.

Thanks.

Well not near Texas but many people go to Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, MA.

There are several universities that offer aviation degrees with flight training in mind. The top two are University of North Dakota (http://aero.und.edu) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. UND won the National Flying Competition this year (and has won 14 in the last 22 years), so I'd say that they're better. Also check out this link and click on "school overall rankings" for more aviation schools out there...

For the last two years I have been doing the college search for the same exact thing...a four year aviation program. I live in New Jersey and those are hard to come by.
Next year I will be attending Kent State University in Ohio and majoring in Flight Technology (aka training to be a pilot)

Bridewater was on my list as was Embry-Riddle, Florida Inst. of Tech, Ohio U. Embry is a great school, however I want to meet kids at college who are persuing other things than aviation. I applied to FIT and got in, however I didn't want to go that far from NJ. Ohio U was very hard to get to. The nearest airports are Columbus Ohio and another in West Virgina. Either way you have a two hour drive just to get to the Airport.

Kent State is a great program and I was impressed by what I saw. It is about 40 minutes from Cleveland Intl. so getting home does not seem like it will be much of a problem. For me it is just a trip to the airport followed by a short flight, or a 6 hour drive home. Texas might be a little more tough, but you would probably be going home about as much as I will...only on holidays.

Just keep looking and eventually you'll find one that is right for you. It may seem like there is little to choose from, and in some ways this helps. However, if you look hard enough there is something for everyone out there. Ohio is loaded with Aviation programs...there's Kent, Ohio U, Ohio State, Bowling Green.
