ATC tape of 1549

Interesting. Thanks for the link.

The controller consistently mis-identifies the flight as "Cactus 1529", then "Cactus 1549" a few times, then back to "Cactus 1529".

And the file download identifies it as audio from AWE "1546"!

The devil is in the details.

I listened to the audio when they played it on CNN...incredible how calm these guys were.

I have been listening to all the tapes. The most interesting one, other than Sully himself staying incredibly calm, was the Cab Coordinator coordinating everything and working through the initial, and sometime inaccurate, reports. It is a really long recording with a lot of dead space.

The other interesting one was Teterboro. On the audio you could hear someone from what appeared to be on the area supervisor's position saying that he didn't think they could land an Airbus there and shortly after making some kind of statement that to me sounded like he wasn't fully on board the concept that an Airbus may be coming and that it didn't really care if he wanted it or not. (If you listen it is fast and in the background.)

Jim, thanks for the FAA link.

Yes Jim, thanks for the link. I actually found the Class B airpspace tape the most interesting, listening to the two helicopter pilots telling the controller live what they where seeing as the Airbus impacted the water right beneath them.

I am impressed the FAA released so much info

The captain had 2 minutes tops.
In listening to the tapes again last night, this point amazed me even more. You could kind of see the thought process at work

1. Return to the airport - couldn't do it
2. Identify alternative airports - identified and recognized that wasn't possible
3. plan for ditching.

As you said - all in about 2 minutes. And by the time option 3 emerged as the only option, setting up to land a plane that wasn't designed to land on water to do so and remain in one piece. And they did THAT in under a minute.
