Flew on an AS 737-900 the other day (it was a good flight); it was quite thing to see such a large 737, especially since I had seen the 737-100 prototype at the museum of flight that day. I noticed that there were no winglets; does anyone here know why AS did not order this option?

I don't know about AS but at FL it was cheaper to install them after purchase b/c Boeing wanted to charge more than we could get them done for by our Heavy Mx vendor.

Well, since my first question is not getting much of a response, here is another. (Do any AS folks actually ever read these pages? May you actually have real outside lives! :D :)

Why both the -800 and -900 versions?

The seem very similar; I suppose I could go to boeing's website and look up the differences in what they do as far as range, payload, etc. But that wouldn't answer my question of why AS opted for both models.

The 900 does not have winglets because the required tests have not been done on the 900. These test were done on the 700 and 800. As to your other question, both versions because the 900 does not fit management's original plan which was east coast flights. Depending on weather, the 900 is unable to go east to west with full pax and the required fuel. This is the reason boeing is coming out with the 900er (I think its er?) On the other hand, the 800 can do it and we only loose about 6 or 8 pax.

Actually, with the 800s we loose either 12 or 15 seats, depending on which 800 configuration is used. The 900s are 16/156 and the 800s come in either 16/144 or 16/141 configurations. Then again, considering how often the 900s are weight restricted even going west to east, it's usually only about 1 or 2 seats difference between a restricted 900 and an 800. No, the 900s are for LA and Anchorage, where the range isn't limiting and the extra belly space is actually usefull.

As for winglets on the other NGs, all the 800s have 'em, and all but three 700s have 'em too, although those three are leased birds and won't be getting them added.
