Any Idea Where Airtran Will Set Up A New Hub?

Just curious if you guys have heard. I think it's a crock of bullSh!* that SWA bullied their way in and has a monopoly at MDW now.

Well, there are ~20 empty gates at DFW. Sure WN has said they want the Wright amendment repealed, but they should be sufficiently distracted with their new MDW gates and by having to run ATA.

It was even a bigger crock of #### that Air Tran's proposal excluded the acquisition of ATA employees. It was a bad deal and I am happy that the SWA acquisition preserves jobs for ATA employees at Midway. No love lost for Air Tran, here.

When it's a monopoly and the airline charges high prices, the government doesn't like it. when they're Southwest and they don't overcharge the public, then it's alright.

Airtran should go in to DFW and see what happens. There is a lot of DFW where AA is getting a pretty premium and Airtran can hurt them. I just went to AA.com and looked at a DFW-SEA r/t leaving on 12/17 and returning on 12/19 and the fare was $2238.20 for coach. That is insane, but there is no other non-stop competition. Nice premium for AA!! Go get them Airtran!!

American Airlines, the worlds largest airlines, will defend its turf. As for DFW, i will assume that will be a code-share city for WN and ATA, as they work quickly for a repeal of the Wright. Costs are high at that airport and AirTran now has to worry about successfully deploying up to 19 new aircraft in 2005 with a profit. Looks bleak in the midst of the ATA asset deal, code-shares coming, and the possibilty of the Wright being lifted.

Or you could make a 1 hour stop in Phoenix (a good amount of time for a plane change) and go on America West for $411.

You just want cheap fares and no personal inconvenience.

You have to think that AirTran had a plan for those 19 planes b4 the ATA opportunity presented itself, so FL will be just fine. Midway would have been a great instant hub that would have solved a lot of problems, but electing to not get into a bidding war and overpaying for the deal was also a smart move. There are lots of places where AirTran can successfully continue to grow in 2005.

Time will tell... yes FL had a plan for those 19 planes under much different economic conditions and industry outlook regarding competition and the fall of certain legacy carriers. We shall see.

There is always ORD, PHL, DFW, STL, MCI, COS just to name a few.

As far as the proposal to not take any ATA employees......I'd say Airtran was thinking of their employees, the merging of two separate workforces and the it's cost in dollars and morale.

There would have been jobs for ATA employees, just not at current pay levels per employee. Spoils go to the victor. Let's see how many employees/managers LUV needs when they assume the six gates they bought. Airtran would have added jobs to it's current staff in greater numbers then LUV.

Bonanza

If those plans were so great, AirTran would not have jumped at the first opportunity to change them. I agree with skyguy25... Time will tell... I am certain something will shakeout soon, giving AirTran another opportunity to change its plans.

Its kinda funny two months before ATA claimed bankruptcy they talked to 10 different airlines about doing some kind of code share/merger including SWA and they did not give ATA the time of day. Then ATA goes bankrupt and signs a deal with AAI. All of sudden SWA is interested. Pleaseeee..........It was a defensable deal, pure and simple. SWA does not want AAI to have a sizable operation in MDW and thats what SWA got. Nothing more and nothing less. If you really believe that SWA did this to SAVE ATA then I need to sell you a bridge in NYC. SWA comes first. Other airline employees are an after thought.
