NEW YORK, May 19 (Reuters) - AMR Corp. (NYSE:AMR - News), the parent company of American Airlines, on Wednesday said Chief Executive Gerard Arpey will add the post of chairman.
At its annual meeting, the company said Edward Brennan would step down as chairman, a post he assumed just last year.

The company, which separated the roles of chief executive and chairman last year, said it was ready to have one person take both posts. Brennan will remain a lead director on AMR's Board.

This doesn't surprise me in the least. The splitting of the titles to begin with was largely ceremonial, and a public relations move to shut the employees up.

I'm not crazy about this. I like Arpey and all, but in general, from a corporate governance perspective, I'm a big fan of having the CEO and the Chairman of the Board positions separate. Oh well.

It's corporate dictatorship. It's been that way in this country for a very long time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
