Officials of Gainsville Airport in Florida will meet with American Airlines officals at the end of the month, 28 October, in hopes of convincing the airline to start Miami-Gainsville non-stop service, as well as service to Dallas. Miami has been without Gainsville service for more than four years now.

I personally don't think AA can make much money flying ATRs between Miami and Gainsville. Airport officials are also in talks with Gulfstream International (Continental Connection) to start the service. They are much better off flying it with thier 19-seat B1900s.

I remember Delta Md80s and 737's going into Gainesville. I guess it is strictly a commuter city now.

Maybe an ATR woudn't be worth it, but how about an ERJ on a DFW-GNV-MIA routing? Higher cost, but also better service in terms of flying time and a/c utilization. I think it is just a matter of time before we see RJ's in Florida, especially as the ATR42s are retired, and places like GNV and TLH might make sense as a way to bridge aircraft to/from MIA.

The ATRs are not going to be retired. They can takeoff from short Caribbean runways that ERJs cannot, plus they can carry cargo loads that ERJs also cannot. Cargo business is a big part of Eagle's profits in the Caribbean.

Former moderator specified the ATR-42s, and yes they are being retired. By the end of next year, all will be gone.

The Super ATRs (ATR-72s) will be around for a while.
