Airlines Rally as American, Southwest Rekindle Expectations

  • Healthy 2019 forecasts contrast with recent investor caution
  • Carriers’ fourth-quarter earnings top Wall Street estimates
U.S. airlines rallied as American Airlines Group Inc.and Southwest Airlines Co. predicted strong revenue gains after surpassing Wall Street’s profit estimates late last year.

American vowed to outperform rivals in charging higher fares this year as it adds flights at hubs where it dominates traffic, such as Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dallas-Fort Worth. Southwest said it was benefiting from strong demand for lucrative business travel and healthy prices for last-minute tickets.

The healthy forecasts contrasted with muted investor expectations for airlines, which have been trailing the broader market amid concerns about pricing power and the impact of the U.S. government shutdown. Shareholders had been bracing for a gloomy earnings season after American and Delta Air Lines Inc. warned earlier this month that they were struggling to raise fares.

But American’s latest report suggests that 2019 is “setting up to be a good year,’’ Helane Becker, an analyst at Cowen & Co., said in a report.

American surged 6.1 percent to $33.58 at 9:37 a.m. in New York after advancing as much as 8.5 percent for the biggest intraday gain in four weeks. Southwest climbed 4.4 percent to $53.26. JetBlue Airways Corp., which also topped analysts’ expectations for fourth-quarter profit, climbed 2.5 percent to $17.67.

Southwest predicted a gain of as much as 5 percent this quarter in revenue for each seat flown a mile, a gauge of pricing power. The outlook exceeded American’s and topped forecasts earlier this month from Delta and United Continental Holdings Inc.

The prediction by Southwest “tops even the most bullish of expectations,” said Jamie Baker, an analyst at JPMorgan Chase & Co., in a note to clients.

Even more of a reason to NOT accept any of Tm's "last offer" advice!

And BTW currently (again) the TWU is holding the Association chair. Brother Pantoja absolutely does not get to make any lone calls on anything without the equal approval of Alex Garcia and the TWU Negotiating Committees.

Again nothing personal to my IAM Brothers and Sisters here.

Who cares, it doesn't matter if it's Weez, or me or anyone else, the path is VERY clear, i.e., 100% clear at this point. Superman himself can't change it after giving up his powers like the Association gave up its leverage.
So, let's use Alex' name. Alex will have to sign on to a TA, allow members to vote, then if it's rejected, submit to arbitration. Yes, AGREE TO ARBITRATION. The only other alternative is to keep everything on ice indefinitely. I'm guessing that the company is fine with the ice.

Tim have you gotten on to Jetnet yet? Man they’re slagging your Bees Knees Company all up and down and sideways. You really need to get on there and start calling those people the most horrible names you can think of and shut them down.

And don’t forget to bring that Scott guy with you too.

Tim does jerry glass over see all negotiations or just the association.Im thinking we may very well be taking a back seat soon

The company deserves it. Our profit sharing is a joke.

I don't believe Uncle Jerry is going to be attending any Pilot or Flight Attendant negotiations except maybe at the end (Just a guess). The company is prepared to move swiftly, ahead of the amendable dates for the Pilots and Flight Attendants. Since both unions are independent company unions, they won't be unnecessarily delaying things to get skin in the game.
The mediators are moving things swiftly with us, make no mistake. But there hasn't been any improvements. The Association has actually been fairly cooperative and recognizes that LUS insurance isn't going to stay. Fleet has been wrapped up anyways, other than being TA'd so most of these negotiations are just going through the motions and that's why it is processing swiftly. The hangup has always been with MX. And the contention will be with scope. Better than United but still giving up work.

Whoa TIM!!!!! You need to be careful man. The last thing you want is Jerry to see you go against the grain and disobey established protocol.

Dude I don’t want to see you get fired when you’re so terrible at selling their spiel.

God forbid they might hire someone who’s good at it.

Tim you said the lus health care is gone well i assumed that all along but the updateds were digging their heels. How are your iam boys going to spin this into something positive. Basically what line of chit will they give us

Once again. The IAM nor the TWU will ever accept arbitration.

Stop with the scare tactics.

And even if it got to the 30 day cooling off period it’s several years away.

Look at WN Mechanics SEVEN years and no impasse asked for nor declared.

It took them over six years to even vote on an offer.
