Today the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Teddy Xidas, president of Association of Flight Attendants Local 40 in Pittsburgh, said the two sides last night were focusing on a proposal that would chop salaries by 10 percent -- down from the company's demand of 15 percent. In return, US Airways would reduce the amount it contributes annually to the flight attendants' pension accounts.
A 10 percent wage cut would reduce the top salary for flight attendants to about $35 an hour, Xidas said.
US Airways is still seeking a 50 percent reduction in vacation days, Xidas said. The $116 million agreement being negotiated does not include $50 million in savings from termination of the flight attendants' defined-benefit pension plan, she added.
"It's not going to be a good proposal,'' Xidas warned. "It's going to be horrible. But I don't know how else to do it. None of us do.''
While no agreement was reached last night, Xidas said she thought a tentative agreement could be struck before hearings resumed this morning in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
Spokesman Joseph Tiberi said yesterday that the IAM had nothing new to report.
