Besieged by rising oil prices, terrorism fears and massive debt levels, shares in the US airlines sector have tumbled 15 per cent over the past six months.
The deeply depressed stock prices have led some analysts to suggest that the long-unloved group may present a buying opportunity. However, a number of industry watchers warn that the sector has not yet finished its descent - a process that is likely to wipe out one or two of the major airlines. They say this makes bargain-hunting in the group far too dangerous.
