Bankruptcy legal fees.

13 May 2012 - 12:39 PM

At least the lawyers are doing well!  No surprise.

There are a lot of losers in any corporate bankruptcy. Employees, contractors, debtors and investors always end up taking a haircut. In consumer-facing businesses, like airlines, the company’s brand often suffers as well when services are cut and defeatist employees stop aiming to please.

There are always winners though: The Lawyers and The Consultants.

Terry Maxon of the Dallas Morning News discovered in a recent filing that American Airlines has racked up nearly $60 million in legal and consulting fees since filing for bankruptcy in November

What an amazing woman. Her death at age 102 is a loss to aviation.

The NPR story includes an interview and a flight with her.

Anthem Blue Cross

11 May 2012 - 06:16 PM

Effective 1/1/12, The Blue Cross vendor for US Airways employee medical benefits changed from BCBS of North Carolina to Anthem Blue Cross. As health insurance companies go, its reputation is less than stellar. The link below shows one on line rating site.(They do not fare better in some others I looked at. )http://insurance.fre...om/reviews/316/

One employee I know had them reject a prescription drug that BCBSNC had covered. They caved in after a letter from her doctor.

The reason for the change is "surely" costs. Has anyone on the board seen any changes for the better or worse from BCNS NC? Has Team Tempe's efforts to hold down costs resulted in worsened care or service?

(Yes, the company also offers the choice of UHC as a provider, no one I know has chosen that option).

Southwest back on the air

On the Fly Premieres Thursday, May 24 @ 9/8c

TLC's new show, On the Fly, gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the modern air travel experience, sharing the large-scale operations and personal customer stories at Southwest Airlines.

With 100 million passengers a year, Southwest is one of the country's largest and busiest airlines. Given unprecedented access, On the Fly goes beyond airport gates to reveal what it takes to transport customers at a time when flying is more complicated than ever before.

Looking forward to the show. I wonder if it will feature as many tipsy passengers as "Airline?" :)

4000+ permutations?

08 May 2012 - 09:23 PM

Today there are legions of fees for services with exponential options and exceptions. A husband and wife flying on either of America’s largest airlines face a matrix with 64 different variations of baggage fees (the most basic of fees). This complex matrix includes factors such as what credit card was used to purchase each ticket, when the baggage fees are paid, are both travelers listed on the same record locator, and are both passengers elite frequent flyer members of the airline in question or an affiliated airline.

Yup, it was once a lot simpler...
