I think your anger is misdirected. Maybe you need to hurl a personal attack at the author for writing a thought-provoking and in-depth article on the state of the middle-class (or what used to be).
There is nothing wrong with taking what you have earned when times are tough. That is what those programs are for. I have never had to go on unemployment or get federal or state subsidies. I did try and collect unemployment when I went on stike at NWA, but was denied by the state of Texas.
Some of my family members have had to use aid, and one still does. He lost his butt and I didn't make an issue of that. I supported him and still do until he can get back on his feet following a devastating injury. He is/was on of the most anti government people you would ever meet. He would now be homeless without the help he has received (or he would have had to move he and his family across the country and in with me).
I sincerely hope you don't have make that choice.
Correction: I do receive an agricultural exemption (timber) on my property taxes here in Texas as well as a homestead exemption on the portion that my house sits on. So I do take some form of aid. There may be more aid that I get when I do my taxes that turbotax automatically deducts based on my information.
